Brilliant guitarist and composer Stephen Ulrich wrote a bunch of music for This American Life. With NPR’s blessing (and the keyboard genius of Thomas Bartlett) we expanded it into a full-length album. Out now on Barbes Records.
Producer, Mixer, Engineer, Mastering, Drums
I am a Grammy-winning music producer and recording engineer from New York. I also supervise and coordinate music teams for theater and television.
I started the drums at age six, and I’ve played them with a diverse range of artists, from Joan Baez to Sting. They all seem to be into yoga.
I am a sucker for language, design, and a dry New York Sour.
I ride an airhead whenever possible.
Not only did Dean hire a first-rate ensemble of truly fine players, they were also great to get on with, making my work an absolute pleasure. As a music producer, Dean also brings world class expertise and focus to the often perfunctory enterprise of cast recordings. I am always excited to work with him.
Whether producing my records or supervising my shows, Dean is sensitive, focused, and in command. From four musicians to forty, he consistently puts together the finest orchestras I have ever heard.
The Last Ship is primarily a play about community; it was important that all of us telling the story formed our own community of spirit and common purpose. Dean understood this implicitly, both as musician (he stood in as drummer on a number of occasions) and in the musicians he selected for our ensemble as music coordinator. I couldn’t have been happier.
New Zealand cellist Charles Brooks takes beautiful photos of the inside of musical instruments.
Kayhan Kalhor is a master of the kamancheh; here he is barely getting by on the setar.
